Over the past few years, personal development and I have become what my youngest used to call “BFFs.”
I read at least a book a week. I watch videos that I find interesting, helpful, or just plain inspiring. And of course, there are my monthly phone calls with the one and only, John C. Maxwell.
Now I’ve decided to start sharing some of my personal development favorites with you! In case you’re looking for more ways to grow personally, spiritually, or professionally.
This week is another book. Now, when I’m reading for growth, I like to read through the entire book once, to get an overall feel for it, and make note of what really interests or speaks to me. Then I read through it a second time, making notes, highlighting passages, and paying special attention to those things that caught my eye the first time around.
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill is a classic and certainly fascinating on many levels.
It was originally published in 1937. My original major in college was History, and getting a first-hand perspective of a time period that happened before WWII makes this book an interesting read on its own. (Once I was able to put aside my raised eyebrows on a few things. Keep in mind the mindset of a man in the 1930’s…)
Anyway, back to the Personal Development side of this book. I own it in both audio, which doesn’t include the updates and notes for the 21st century, and the paperback copy (which does include those updates). This time around, my favorite parts have been the “Self-confidence Formula” found in the chapter on Faith and the “script” found in the chapter on Autosuggestion.
We can’t make a change in ourselves if we don’t believe it, right?
Anyway, this one is definitely going back on the “read/listen to it again list. There’s so much here that it’s hard to absorb in one or even two go-rounds.
How about you? Do you have a favorite way to grow yourself personally? Videos, podcasts, books? Feel free to share them here or on our Facebook page. With my one book per week reading goal this year, I’m always on the lookout for new books to read!
