Over the past few years, personal development and I have become what my youngest used to call “BFFs.”
I read at least a book a week. I watch videos that I find interesting, helpful, or just plain inspiring. And of course, there are my monthly phone calls with the one and only, John C. Maxwell.
Now I’ve decided to start sharing some of my personal development favorites with you! In case you’re looking for more ways to grow personally, spiritually, or professionally.
This week is another book. Now, when I’m reading for growth, I like to read through the entire book once, to get an overall feel for it, and make note of what really interests or speaks to me. Then I read through it a second time, making notes, highlighting passages, and paying special attention to those things that caught my eye the first time around.
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo is truly just that – life-changing. I read this little book in one sitting and then jumped up, at 2:00 a.m., and dove into the wreck that my husband and I call our home office.
Instead of waffling on about the book, I’ll let some visuals do the talking. A picture, in this case, is definitely worth a thousand words!
The Before and After Magic of Tidying Up!
Ok, I’m going to waffle a little bit.
One thing I really liked about Ms. Kondo’s book is, she tells you how to decide what to keep and what to release from your life. Basically, “does it spark joy” when you touch it or look at it. If not, it’s time to say good-bye.
It took me all day, that Saturday, to get that room in shape. But in the end, I donated seven boxes
of books that, while I love, I’d only cracked open once. Pictures got hung, others got donated as well. Office supplies got sorted and stored. And now, I’m actually more productive in my office. I’m still working on the rest of the house.
How about you? Do you have a favorite way to grow yourself personally? Videos, podcasts, books? Feel free to share them here or on our Facebook page. With my one book per week goal this year, I’m always on the lookout for new books to read!
