So, I made what’s either the awesomest or scariest decision of my life recently.
I returned to school.
You see, I’m fast approaching 40. It’s bearing down on me like a rabid pack of dogs after a tasty pork chop.
And now that I probably qualify as a real adult (I mean, I’m married, I have kids, a house, a garden, a dog and two responsible jobs), it’s probably past time to finish my education. Even if it wasn’t long past time, finishing school’s been a dream of mine for over a decade.
But homework. Quizzes. Exams. Research Papers! It’s enough to scare the sweatpants off of me.
But because it’s a dream of mine, I re-enrolled in school this summer and shared my excitement with my family, friends, grocer, hair stylist, co-workers… really, anyone who would listen and a few who wouldn’t.
Most of those folks were really supportive (even the nice lady in line in front of me at Super Lube) offering hearty “Yay! That’s awesome!” But there was one person who was openly unsupportive of my decision.
That stung a bit. Mainly because this person was the last person I expected to not be in my corner. This is a person who I admire greatly and who’s opinion I value.
So what did I do?
I asked questions and plugged onward.
Why the questions? Because my relationship with this person is one I want to maintain. So I wanted to see where the lack of support was stemming from as well as explain my own point of view.
So here’s what you can do if someone close to you is pushing back on your decision to reach for the stars:
- Ask why they feel the way they do. Are they afraid of something in the relationship going south (like, for example, finances) while you pursue this dream? There may be a reason they’re acting out now. And if you’re in a position to, try to reassure them or mitigate their concerns. After all, you care about them or their lack of support wouldn’t hurt as much.
- Explain, without getting emotional, why this is important to you.
- In the end, if your dream is that important to you, you may have to just put your chin up and plow ahead.
And remember, even if they love you with all their hearts, not everyone is going to be supportive all the time.
It’s up to you to stay the course of your dreams. If you can still do this in the face of someone’s lack of support or disapproval, then it was a dream or goal that you truly wanted and you were unstoppable in getting it!
We all need support from time to time, and if you’re not getting enough of it, I’m here — for YOU. Drop me a line if you need me. And remember, keep your chin up, always!
