Getting up at 4:30 a.m. is simple in comparison to changing a lifetime of eating habits.
I’d rather stumble out of bed (and, more often than not, right into the wall) hours before the first tweeting bird than fight a lifetime of conditioning and give up my Frito Corn Chip at lunch.
You see, all my life, from preschool through now, my lunches have looked roughly like this:
- Potato Chips
- Apple, Pear or Banana (which usually found its way into the trash)
- Juice box or soda.
Nearly forty years worth of lunches have included that salty crunch with my sandwich (followed by a sweet goodie). Even if I bring a “hot” lunch with me to work now, I’m still looking for a Dorito to wash it down with.
But now that I’m serious about changing my eating and exercise habits, I’m trying to find ways to recondition myself. (And I can’t keep saying “but I’ve always done this!” forever.)
I stumbled on a chip solution about month or so ago.
It was 5:30 a.m. and I was out of chips. In desperation, I sliced an apple into super-thin slices, tossed it with some lemon juice and packed it with my sandwich. I was incredibly surprised when, at lunch, the crunch of the slightly sour apple not only satisfied my craving for chips, but I actually liked it a bit better than my chips!
Now I have a sliced apple with my sandwich every day and even with some of my hot lunches too.
Unfortunately, it hasn’t gone quite far enough to help me recondition the need for something sweet after a meal. I’m still looking for ways to help me around that. I admit that my batteries died a long time ago in the willpower department.
So let me ask you — Do you have any food swaps that work for you? I’m always looking for things to try! Feel free to share your tips in the comments.
