Over the past three years, personal development and I have become what my youngest used to call “BFFs.”
I read at least a book a week. I watch videos that I find interesting, helpful, or just plain inspiring. And of course, there are my monthly phone calls with the one and only, John C. Maxwell.
Now I’ve decided to start sharing some of my personal development favorites with you! In case you’re looking for more ways to grow personally, spiritually, or professionally.
This week is another book. Now, when I’m reading for growth, I like to read through the entire book once, to get an overall feel for it, and make note of what really interests or speaks to me. Then I read through it a second time, making notes, highlighting passages, and paying special attention to those things that caught my eye the first time around.
Be Our Guest: Perfecting the Art of Customer Service by the Disney Institute with Theodore Kinni is another book that I go back to often and re-read because so much of my life revolves around customer service. And nobody does customer service better than Disney.
This time around, my focus has been on creating a common purpose and defining quality standards. For example, Disney’s revolve around: Safety, Courtesy, “Show,” and Efficiency (in that order).
This section has me thinking about how I can develop standards of my own, and then how I can apply them both in my day job and my side jobs. It’s a work in progress and I don’t have a set answer yet. But when I do get one, I’ll probably come back and share it.
How about you? Do you have a favorite way to grow yourself personally? Videos, podcasts, books? Feel free to share them here or on our Facebook page. With my one book per week reading list, I’m always on the lookout for new books to read!
